Died whilst clearing beach mines laid as part of the anti-invasion measures laid around the coast of the UK. Inquiry heard that the unusual features of the section of the minefield is a double apron fence inside the dannett wire perimeter fence. Possibly Lance Corporal Briscoe got a got a reaction on his locator and assumed it came from a visible picket, whereas the reaction was from a mine laying close against the picket. The position of the crater confirms the fact that it must have been nearly touching the mine. How this double apron fence came to be almost on top of the mine is difficult to explain. Verdict that the explosion was an accident and no one is to blame. Location of incident was Wyke Regis.
Lieutenant Morgan was in charge of the operation and was wounded with a number of others by the explosion. Lieutenant Morgan despite his wounds entered the live part of the minefield to remove the wounded and Lance Corporal Briscoes body.
