An unexploded bomb was reported on the 26th October 1940 at Kilburn Terrace, Eastbourne. This had been dropped by a Dornier DO17. Sergeant C.W. Hoare was investigating it when there was an explosion Sergeant Hoare and Police Sergeant Dennis Owens were killed. The investigation into this incident found that the original reported bomb was still intact and its fuse had been removed. The explosion had been caused by another undiscovered bomb detonating.
